Dave Givens


Born July 11, 1911 in Jackson, Madison County; son of David Charles and Alice Irene (Doyle) Givens. Attended Jackson public schools; Lambeth College, Jackson; received B. S. and M.A. degrees from Memphis State University, Shelby County. Married May 11, 1939 in Memphis to Hazel Hamil, daughter of John and Lelia (Parham) Hamil; children: Alice Emily and David Doyle, Jr.
He resided in Somerville where was an educator; served at various times as principal of schools in Medon, Moscow, and Somerville. Past-Chairman of the Fayette County Democratic Election Commission; past foreman of the Fayette County Grand Jury; was a member of the Fayette County Equalization Board. Chief Clerk, state Limited Consititutional Convention of 1965. Member of the Free and Accepted Masons having served as master of the Somerville Lodge 73, Kappa Sigma fraternity, Southern Historical Society; and the West Tennessee Historical Society. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church having served many years as an elder.
He represented Fayette County in the 80th-83rd Assemblies, Fayette, Hardeman, and Haywood in the 84th, and Fayette and Hardeman in the 85th. He served from 1957-1969.
