Local girl to march in 2010 Rose Parade |

The band became a marching band in 2005 when the Ohio School for the Deaf revived its football program after a 30+ hiatus. There are currently 17 members in the band and about as many sighted marching assistants. They recently performed at an Ohio State University Skull Session in St. John Arena. Bellefontaine resident Macy McClain and her co-members of the Ohio State School for the Blind Marching Band already know what they're doing New Years Day, 2010. They're marching in the 2010 Tournament of Roses Parade.
The furthest the band has ever traveled before is Circleville.
The band faces unusual challenges in raising funds for its trip to the West Coast, said the band's co-director, Carol Agler, because the school is an agency of the state. They have to sort through Ohio's Ethics Commission requirements.
Information on supporting the band can be found at http://tbdbitl.osu.edu/?action=a148, or send checks made out to OSSB PTSO with "music department" in the intent line to:

"I think it's a great opportunity for us as a whole," said Macy, who plays the flute. Macy is the daughter of Mark and Crystal McClain of Bellefontaine and twin sister to BHS Senior Madison. |

US auto sales drop in 2008, recovery unclear |

Automakers are reluctant to predict when their industry might turn around, following an 18 percent drop in sales during 2008.
An even sharper 36 percent plunge during December alone means record high rebates and low-interest financing deals will stick around until at least February.
The industry's fortunes are being watched closely in Ohio, the state second in auto production after Michigan. Nearly 100,000 people work in automotive assembly and parts plants around Ohio. |

Former Mayor Hamilton calls presidential win significant |
Written by Bill Tipple | |
Friday, 07 November 2008
Many local residents are still reflecting on Barack Obama's historic win. Obama had 364 electoral votes to John McCain's 173 electoral votes Tuesday. Despite only winning in 20 of our state's 88 counties, Obama still carried Ohio. Former Bellefontaine Mayor Gail Hamilton is a big supporter of Obama. Hamilton earned a historic win here when he was elected our city's first black mayor 13 years ago. (Video interviews included.) Watch him react to Obama's win. He says the Illinois senator has an ability to work with people in the United States and all across the world. Mr. Hamilton says there are a few reasons behind Obama's surge in popularity over the last twenty months. Since both men are political pioneers, we asked the former mayor what advice he would offer the President-elect. Hamilton, 83, says race relations have drastically improved since he served our country in the 40s. He says Obama's win will bring even more progress. Obama has already started selecting members of his Cabinet and transition team. On January 21st, he will inherit a nation that is in financial turmoil and waging two wars overseas -- making a quick, smooth transition imperative. Obama has already named Representative Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., as his chief of staff and set up meetings with an economic advisory board. |

Benjamin Logan and Riverside fall in tournament volleyball |
Written by Bill Tipple | |
Monday, 20 October 2008
Two local varsity volleyball teams came up short in sectional title matches Saturday afternoon. In Division II, Benjamin Logan fell to Urbana in three games at Tecumseh (25-18, 25-13, 25-22).
Freshman Lexi Coughlin led the Raiders with 9 kills.
Bailey Kerns and Jessica Allen added 5 kills apiece.
Tiffany Rader ended the match with 19 assists.
Abby Small tallied 9 digs. Lauren Stahl and Jessica Allen had 8 digs apiece. The Raiders finish the season 14-9 overall and 5-5 in the CBC for third place in the Mad River division.
Head coach Gretchen Powell said, "Urbana executed their game plan well. They double (sometimes triple) blocked our middle hitters and hit line against our defense. They came to play. We started to adjust, especially in game 3, but it was a little too late. I am very proud of the way the team came together toward the end of the season. We ended with some great victories. Our five seniors will be missed."
In Division IV, Riverside lost to Lehman in three games (25-7, 25-19, 25-13) at Sidney High School.
Sarah Schindewolf had 4 points, 8 digs, and was 6/8 on serve receive.
Abby Heaberlin recorded 3 points, 8 digs, and was 5/8 on serve receive.
Amelia Carter had 5 kills and 4 blocks.
Taylor Leiss added 5 points and 2 kills. Riverside went 17-8 overall and 6-1 in the NWCC. Head coach Brooxie Crouch said, "The girls have had a great season this year and have accomplished a lot for being such a young team. They have improved in several areas this year from last year and they need to be reminded how great that is. Unfortunately we couldn't get our act together and simply we were outplayed. The girls struggled in all areas and it made it difficult to make any good plays. They did a nice job trying to turn around the second game but it wasn't enough to hold off Lehman. They finish the season 17-8 overall. They have accomplished being second place in the NWCC, their record is above .500, and they also went to the sectional finals, which is an improvement in all areas from last year. I lose one senior and hopefully the rest of them return next year for a phenomenal season." |

Patrol urges drivers to use patience and prepare for driving in winter weather |
Written by Scott Stockdale
Sunday, 28 December 2008
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is urging motorists to make safety their first priority while driving in inclement weather.
The Patrol is offering the following tips to assist motorists with winter driving:
• Allow extra time to get to your destination.
• Maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and traffic ahead.
• Pay attention to the roadways and weather conditions, as they can change rapidly. • Always pay close attention to bridges and overpasses, as they are often the first to freeze over.
• If you do slide off the side of the road, stay with your vehicle and call the patrol at 1-877-7-PATROL.
• If you get stuck in snow, make sure that your tail pipe is free of all snow and debris, to decrease your chance of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The Patrol recommends that in the event of a vehicle breakdown, turn on hazard warning lights, safely position the vehicle as far off the road as possible and open the hood. Place a "help" sign in the rear window, and stay inside the vehicle until help arrives. If a cell phone is available, dial 1-877-7-PATROL for assistance and the call will be directed to the nearest Patrol post.
Troopers suggest all motorists have the following items in their vehicle in case of a breakdown:
• Cell phone
• Road flares or reflectors
• Help or Call Police signs
• First aid kit
• Flashlight
• Blanket/Sleeping bag
• Small shovel
• Bottled water and energy foods
• Candles and matches
• Tow strap/chain
Up-to-the-minute road conditions are always available by logging onto the Ohio Department of Transportation's (ODOT) Web site, http://www.buckeyetraffic.org/, which received more than 117 million hits during last year's winter driving season. ODOT also reminds motorists: Ice and Snow...Take It Slow. |

Automakers report big losses, layoffs planned at GM |
Written by Bill Tipple | |
Saturday, 08 November 2008
General Motors Corporation says it lost $2.5 billion in the third quarter and warned that it could run out of cash in 2009. GM also said it has suspended talks to acquire Chrysler. The automaker also said its cash burn for the quarter accelerated to $6.9 billion due to a severe U.S. auto sales slump. The company on Friday reported a net loss of $4.45 per share during the quarter, compared with a record-setting loss of $42.5 billion, or $75.12 per share, a year ago. Revenue fell to $37.9 billion from $43.7 billion. Major layoffs are coming to 10 GM assembly plants, including Lordstown, Ohio.
General Motors says about 3,600 workers will be laid off indefinitely beginning early next year as the automaker slows down production at 10 of its assembly plants.
GM spokesman Anthony Sapienza said Friday the production line "re-rates," as they are called, help reduce inventory and adjust to shrinking market demand.
Four line re-rates will take effect January 12th at Michigan plants in Hamtramck and Lansing; Wentzville, Mo.; and Oshawa, Ontario.
More slowdowns will begin January 20th at factories in Bowling Green, Kentucky; Lordstown, Ohio; and Spring Hill, Tennessee.
Re-rates also will start February 2nd in Oakland County's Orion Township in Michigan and Kansas City, Missouri, and February 9th at a second Lansing plant. Ford Motor Company said Friday it lost $129 million in the third quarter as the struggling automaker burned through $7.7 billion in cash and set plans for more job cuts. Ford said it will eliminate about 2,260 more white-collar employees in North America as it battles continued weak demand, the credit crisis and the worst economic downturn in decades. American Honda Motor Company posted October sales of 85,864, a decline of 28.0 percent based on the daily selling rate compared to record October 2007 results. American Honda year-to-date sales of 1,266,447 represent a 3.6 percent decrease. October was a tough month for locally produced vehicles, except for the 2009 Acura TL. Here are the numbers on the vehicles produced at our local plants. East Liberty: Honda Civic -24.8 percent Honda CR-V -24.4 percent Honda Element -42.2 percent Marysville: Honda Accord -38 percent Acura RDX -67.8 percent Acura TL +22.2 percent |

Logan County Health District Levy Fails |

Tuesday, 04 November 2008
In a third attempt to gain Logan County's support, the Logan County Health District was again defeated on Tuesday. In a close race voters rejected the levy 51 percent to 48 percent. The Health Board has already implemented two rounds of cuts eliminating staff, reducing hours of operation and increasing the cost of vaccinations to name a few. (Audio interview included.) The mass vaccination clinic was also cancelled this year. Listen to Health Commissioner Dr. Boyd Hoddinott discuss the effects from the rejection of the levy. Cutbacks at 50 percent will be experienced effective January 1st if there is not a drastic change in the economic condition. |

Levy discussion continues at Riverside |
Written by Elizabeth Jones
Thursday, 18 December 2008
Levy proposals remained the main topic at the Riverside school board meeting Thursday evening. School board treasurer Lisa Fahnke presented a request for a .75% five-year income tax levy to be added to a May 5th special election. The income tax is currently in existence but will expired December, 31, 2009. An emergency property tax levy to produce $700,000 was also discussed as Fahnke explained a potential for a $1.7 million short fall by the 2010-2011 school year.
School Board president Jim Cox said the community “voted down the best thing,” referring to the defeated 2% replacement tax that was on the November ballot, but went on to say that "by the end of January a plan is needed and numbers have to be generated." (Audio interviews included.)
Listen to board President Jim Cox talk about the hold on the proposed property tax levy.
Members of the community in attendance of the meeting were also seeking solutions and best options.
Listen to Jim Cox request for community input.
In other news, Superintendent Bernie Pachmayer spoke about Title 1, which provides monies to the school for economically disadvantage students. Pachmayer noted that students in grades K-6 register, but a decline is noticed for students in 7-12th grades. The program provides free breakfast and lunch, waived academic fees and additional academic opportunities. Pachmayer encourages all those entitled to register stating it is “another way to help the school district and help the student.” Riverside schools recently had a complaint from the Ohio Department of Health, noting that there was a smoking violation on the school premises on November 25th. The fees for such violation range from $100 to $2500 to the school and up to $100 to the individual. Pachmayer stated that school was not in session that day, but emphasized the importance of upholding the no smoking policy at all school functions. The board approved the following agenda items:
A one-year limited contract for a specialized aide to Rob Kilgore. A one-year limited teaching contract for a speech language pathologist to Kristi Oliver. A resignation was accepted from bus driver Addison Crouch who was also approved for a sub bus driver position. Lastly, it was announced that the Riverside Pre-school program would be opening January 5th with a ribbon cutting ceremony to be held on January 22nd. The board will hold an organizational meeting January 8th at 5:00 p.m. |

US auto sales drop in 2008, recovery unclear |
Written by Bill Tipple | |
Wednesday, 07 January 2009
Automakers are reluctant to predict when their industry might turn around, following an 18 percent drop in sales during 2008.
An even sharper 36 percent plunge during December alone means record high rebates and low-interest financing deals will stick around until at least February.
The industry's fortunes are being watched closely in Ohio, the state second in auto production after Michigan. Nearly 100,000 people work in automotive assembly and parts plants around Ohio. |

664th Squadron honored with historical marker |

The Ohio Hi-Point Career Center honored the 664th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron of the United States Air Force, formerly housed on what is today the school district's campus, with a historical marker in remembrance and honor of their service of those who lived and worked on the base from 1951-1969.
The historical marker was placed just outside the campus' entrance Monday during a dedication ceremony involving staff members of OHP, members of the 664th Veteran's group, and other distinguished guests and friends. "We think it is important to place a high value on the history we have here on our campus, which includes the former Air Force Base," said Superintendent Kim Davis. We will always make sure our students and communities are aware of the deep commitment and sacrifices made by those who served our country while here in the 664th. This historical marker is just a small way to recognize those who came before us."For 18 years, OHP's current campus was home to the Bellefontaine Air Force Station. Personnel of the 664th manned the site atop the highest point of Ohio, Campbell Hill, to monitor the skies and provide early warning during the peak of the Cold War. Many of the buildings still remain at OHP and have been renovated to house career training programs or office space. The Historical marker is just the first in a series of events marking the celebration of OHP's history in its 35th anniversary year. |

Junior guard Justin Baughman hit a mid range jumper at the buzzer to help Bellefontaine stun visiting Tecumseh 60-59 Saturday night in varsity boys basketball. As featured on 1390 WBLL, the CBC Kenton Trail rivals traded leads throughout the game. The Chiefs outscored the Arrows 23-10 in the second quarter to take a 34-26 halftime lead. Tecumseh then seized momentum in the second half by opening the third quarter with a 13-4 run to take a 39-38 lead. (Audio and video interviews included.) The Arrows led 54-51 with just over two minutes remaining when head coach Roger Culbertson decided to spread the floor. Tecumseh hurt themselves with several missed free throws, but junior guard Dustin Holmes hit four key foul shots to give the Arrows a 59-55 lead with 12 seconds remaining. Chieftain junior guard Zach Showalter drilled a three-pointer to make it 59-58 with 4.3 seconds remaining. BHS head coach Henry Stolly immediately called a timeout to set up a full court defense. Tecumseh attempted to get the ball to Holmes, but the ball went off of his hand and rolled out of bounds by the Chieftain jock block with 2.2 seconds remaining. Que Carter inbounded the ball to Baughman near the top of the key. Baughman quickly looked for Showalter on the baseline. After that option wasn't available, Baughman took two dribbles and hit a twelve-footer on the right side to cap a fantastic finish. His shot rimmed in as the buzzer sounded. The Chieftain bench, including Coach Stolly, rushed the floor in celebration. Watch Showalter's three, the Arrows turnover, and Baughman's game-winner. BHS overcame some staggering numbers to post the win. Tecumseh shot 36 free throws to Bellefontaine's 8. The Arrows converted 21 foul shots and the Chiefs only made one. Bellefontaine turned the ball over 19 times. Baughman scored a team-high 14 points. He added 4 assists and 4 steals. Que Carter and Brock Mitchell each added 12. Chris Lowe grabbed a team-best 6 rebounds. Holmes powered Tecumseh with 22 points. Here's the Ron's Pizza Scoreboard:
Bellefontaine is 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the CBC. The Chiefs will visit Dayton Stebbins on Friday, January 2nd. Coach Stolly spoke with Bill Tipple after the wild finish. Listen to his postgame comments. Tecumseh is 3-2, 2-1. The Arrows will travel to Springfield Shawnee on Friday, January 2nd. |
